The Oklahoma Community Policing Officer Award was established by the Oklahoma Regional Community Policing Institute and the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police to formally recognize uniformed officers, law enforcement executives and involved community members for their efforts in establishing the community policing philosophy within the state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Community Policing Officer Award identifies the recipient as an individual who not only believes in the concept of community policing, but has also demonstrated active participation in performing service to fellow officers, service to their community, and for their efforts in building community partnerships.

It is the intent of the Oklahoma Community Policing Officer Award to place honor on service to community through community policing practices. The award sets a standard across Oklahoma and in individual municipalities that indicates the recipient is committed to crime prevention through building partnerships and community involvement.

The award is a ribbon which is displayed on the police uniform. The colors of the ribbon are dark blue and gold. The two outer blue fields represent law enforcement and the community as a whole. The middle blue field contains the letters "CPO" encased in gold representing the recipient and the role that they have played in bridging the gap between law enforcement and community members. Each recipient also receives a certificate verifying that the individual has met the criteria for the award.

Eligibility Requirements and Nomination Process

To be considered for the award, a candidate must have attended a minimum of thirty-two (32) hours of community policing training. This training may originate from the following sources (proof of course completion must accompany all applications):

If an individual believes that they meet the minimum educational requirements, they may contact their Training Officer or the Oklahoma Regional Community Policing Institute to initiate the application process.
The application packet consists of a completed application form, proof of educational qualifications and a narrative written by the nominee's chief of police. The chief's narrative will certify and describe the candidate's active participation in the following areas:
  • Personal philosophy
  • Service to fellow officers
  • Service to community
  • Community partnerships
When the Oklahoma Regional Community Policing Institute receives the nomination packet, it will be reviewed for completeness. If, for some reason, the nomination is not complete, or not approved, the nominee will be notified. The application can be completed or clarified and resubmitted.
